The be; birds: How Volunteers Help This Community Fly
Our ambassadors, advocates, and everyday changemakers

the be; community
At be;, we call our volunteers and ambassadors the be; birds. It’s more than a nickname—it’s a way of honoring the people who carry our message out into the world. Just like a flock, the be; birds create movement and energy together, helping our community soar higher than it could alone. Some are what we call “big birds”—volunteers who help organize, plan, and spread the word. Others are “baby birds,” who act as ambassadors in everyday life, whether that’s answering questions about be; when someone notices their T-shirt, or sharing our events on social media. Every role matters. Every effort builds momentum.

Why They Matter
Our programs—whether it’s be; social, be; supported, be; inspired, or any of our branches—don’t run on staff alone. They thrive because of the people who show up to help set up chairs, share flyers, welcome newcomers, and carry the spirit of be; into their neighborhoods. As Sheryl shared in her interview, being a be; bird can be as simple as saying yes to lending a hand: “I’ll share things on social media. I’ll ask my friends to come to events. If someone asks me about my shirt, I tell them about be;. I’m down—what do you need? I’m here.” That kind of everyday advocacy makes a huge difference. It turns our affirming space inside the center into a ripple effect that reaches far beyond our walls.

How be; birds Support the Organization
Spreading the word: Handing out flyers, posting on social, and simply talking about what be; means to them. Showing up at events: Helping with set-up, welcoming new faces, or just bringing positive energy to a room. Building connections: Acting as bridges between be; and local businesses, schools, and community groups. Living the mission: Wearing the shirt, sharing the story, embodying the belief that everyone deserves to be celebrated, not just tolerated. In the words of David Michael, a be; leader and volunteer himself: “I’ve never seen a group of people so dedicated and so happy to be part of something. Our volunteers are the reason this place feels alive.”

The Importance of be; birds
The be; birds are the heartbeat of our movement. They remind us that community isn’t built by programs alone—it’s built by people who care enough to give their time, their voice, and their presence. Without them, our work would be smaller. With them, it feels limitless. As one community member put it: “be; gives us community where we used to feel isolated. It means everything.” When each of us shows up fully—whether as a big bird, baby bird, or anything in between—we help make sure everyone has a place to belong.
